How Often Should You Change Hot Tub Water?

Regular testing and treatment can keep hot tub water clean for a considerable period, but the same water cannot be maintained indefinitely.

Over time, dissolved minerals, chemical by-products, body oils and other contaminants accumulate. Eventually, the water becomes difficult to balance and no longer responds effectively to routine treatment.

Changing the water at the right time helps protect water quality, improve bather comfort and reduce unnecessary pressure on the hot tub’s filtration and circulation systems.

How frequently should hot tub water be changed?

Many domestic hot tubs require draining and refilling approximately every three to four months.

However, this is a general guide rather than a fixed rule. The correct frequency depends on:

  • How often the hot tub is used
  • The number of bathers
  • The size of the hot tub
  • The volume of water
  • The effectiveness of the filtration system
  • How consistently the water is tested
  • Whether bathers shower before use
  • The type of sanitising system

A lightly used hot tub with well-maintained water may remain manageable for longer. A frequently used family hot tub may require a water change sooner.

Why can’t the water simply be treated forever?

Every time the hot tub is used, contaminants enter the water. These may include sweat, body oils, cosmetics, sun cream and detergent residue from swimwear.

Water-care chemicals also leave dissolved material behind as they perform their job. Although filtration and sanitation control many contaminants, they do not remove everything.

As the concentration of dissolved substances increases, the water may become dull, foamy or difficult to balance. Adding more products can eventually worsen the problem rather than correct it.

Draining and refilling resets the water and provides a clean starting point.

Signs that your hot tub water needs changing

The calendar is not the only way to judge when a water change is required.

Look for the following warning signs:

  • The water remains cloudy after treatment
  • Foam repeatedly returns
  • The water has an unpleasant or stale smell
  • The sanitiser level is difficult to maintain
  • The pH continually moves outside its recommended range
  • The shell develops a persistent, greasy waterline
  • The water feels uncomfortable on the skin
  • Chemical treatments are no longer producing the expected result
  • The hot tub has experienced unusually heavy use

These symptoms can also indicate filtration, circulation or contamination problems. If changing the water does not resolve them, the hot tub may require further inspection.

Heavy summer use can shorten the interval

Hot tubs often receive more use during the summer, particularly when children, friends or visiting family members use the water.

More bathers introduce more organic material and place additional demand on the sanitiser. Sun cream, moisturiser and cosmetics can also build up quickly.

During periods of heavy use, test the water more frequently and monitor how well it responds to treatment. A hot tub that would normally require a water change every four months may need to be drained sooner following repeated high-use sessions.

Does topping up the water count as changing it?

Adding fresh water replaces water lost through evaporation, splashing and filter cleaning, but it is not the same as a full drain and refill.

Topping up can dilute some dissolved material, but much of the older water and its accumulated contaminants remain inside the hot tub.

Regular top-ups are necessary to maintain the correct level, but they should not replace scheduled water changes.

Should you clean the pipework before draining?

Contaminants can collect inside the hot tub’s internal plumbing. This buildup is not always visible from the surface and may remain in place when the water is drained.

Before a planned water change, it can be helpful to use a specialist pipe-cleaning or system-flushing product. This loosens deposits so they can be removed with the old water.

Use only a product intended for hot tubs and follow its instructions carefully. Some products require the filters to be removed during treatment.

Where contamination, slime or recurring water-quality problems are suspected, professional system cleaning may be appropriate.

How to drain a hot tub safely

The exact procedure differs between models, so consult the manufacturer’s guidance before starting.

The general process usually involves:

  • Switching off and isolating the electrical supply
  • Connecting the drainage hose or opening the drain valve
  • Directing the water to a suitable drainage point
  • Allowing the hot tub to empty fully
  • Removing any remaining water where required
  • Cleaning the shell with an approved hot tub cleaner
  • Rinsing the filters or replacing them if necessary
  • Checking the jets and accessible fittings

Never leave pumps or heaters running while the hot tub is empty. Operating the system without sufficient water can cause serious damage.

Consider where the water will drain before opening the valve. Avoid releasing chemically treated water directly onto sensitive plants, lawns or areas where it could cause flooding.

Cleaning the hot tub before refilling

Once the hot tub is empty, wipe the shell using a non-abrasive product designed for spa surfaces.

Pay particular attention to:

  • The waterline
  • Headrests
  • Jet surrounds
  • Accessible suction fittings
  • The underside of the cover
  • Filter compartments

Avoid ordinary bathroom cleaners, bleach and washing-up liquid unless the manufacturer specifically approves them. Household products may leave residues, create foam or damage the finish.

Rinse the surfaces thoroughly so no cleaning product remains when the hot tub is refilled.

Refilling the hot tub correctly

Follow the manufacturer’s recommended filling method. Many hot tubs should be filled through the filter housing to reduce the risk of air becoming trapped in the plumbing.

Once the water reaches the correct level:

  • Check that valves and fittings are in the correct position
  • Restore the electrical supply
  • Start the circulation system
  • Confirm that water is moving through the jets correctly
  • Allow the water to reach the required temperature
  • Test and balance the water
  • Add sanitiser according to the product instructions

Do not use the hot tub until the water is correctly balanced and the sanitiser has reached a safe operating level.

How to make fresh water last longer

Good habits can extend the period between water changes and make the water easier to manage.

  • Ask bathers to shower before entering
  • Keep sun cream and cosmetics out of the water where possible
  • Rinse swimwear thoroughly
  • Clean the filters regularly
  • Maintain the recommended water level
  • Test the water consistently
  • Keep the hot tub covered when it is not in use
  • Treat water problems promptly
  • Avoid adding chemicals without first testing the water

The aim is not simply to make the water last as long as possible. The priority is to keep it clean, comfortable and safe to use.

When should a professional handle the water change?

Many owners can complete a routine drain and refill themselves. Professional support may be valuable when:

  • The water is heavily contaminated
  • There is slime or suspected biofilm
  • The hot tub has been unused for a long period
  • Water problems return soon after refilling
  • The pumps or jets are not circulating correctly
  • Hot tub requires a deeper internal clean
  • The filters, heater or circulation system need inspecting

A professional service can combine the water change with checks of the components that influence water quality.

Keep your hot tub water manageable

For many domestic hot tubs, changing the water every three to four months provides a useful starting point. Usage and water condition should ultimately determine the timing.

Do not wait for the water to become severely cloudy, foamy or unpleasant. Draining and refilling at the right time is often quicker and more economical than repeatedly trying to correct exhausted water.
